As the 21st century moves onward, vanity is becoming more a virtue than a vice. Attention to physical appearance has become the new class marker in America; this is especially true when it comes to teeth. Aesthetic dentistry is on the rise, becoming sort of a plastic surgery for teeth. Unfortunately, most cosmetic dentistry is not cheap, nor is it covered by insurance.



Now that a radiant mouth full of pearly whites is the standard of excellence, many Americans are considering cosmetic dental work even if they can't afford it. Like many other things that Americans think they want, but not necessarily need, there are plenty of banks and other money-lending institutions who arrange dental financing plans with people who want a bright smile today and a big bill tomorrow.



Most dental financing plans are used for veneers (both porcelain and composite), Invisalign or other invisible brace systems, tooth whitening, and tooth alignment. On occasion, a financing plan might be devised for necessary dental work if the client does not have sufficient insurance to cover the cost of the procedure. However, it should be noted that, if you are interested in a financing plan, it is absolutely crucial that you investigate the situation thoroughly. This is just like any other financial agreement, and especially at this time, banks and lenders would like to entice you with a loan that you might not be able to manage. So, perhaps the most important question to ask yourself is: why do I want to set up a dental financing plan? What dental or orthodontic work am I trying to get done, and is it a need or a want? Is this something I'd spend the money on if I could afford my dental operation up front?

Many times, a dentist will recommend to you in the dentist's office if you would like to set up a financing plan right there. Usually it's best to go home and do some research rather that sign any agreement there in the office. Many dentists have a financial agreement with some of these dental financing companies; these agreements are often to the dentist's benefit, not yours. Another thing to consider is the nature of the financial agreement between you and any dental financiers. There is no collateral with these agreements, and obviously they can't sic the repo man on your new veneers. Therefore, the payment schedules are usually very strict. Interest can also be quite steep; expect the interest to skyrocket if you miss a payment on the plan.
